What is Language Immersion?

Language immersion programs are an exciting option for parents and educators who want children to have the advantages of a rigorous academic program while also learning two languages.

Such programs are growing in popularity throughout the nation and have proven effective in preparing students for academic success across all subjects.

In language immersion programs, students study the traditional curriculum for all or part of the day in a foreign (“target”) language. They become proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding another language in addition to English.

Most language immersion programs are conducted at the elementary school level. Students typically begin in kindergarten and continue through fifth grade or middle school, then go on to advanced language courses in high school.

Benefits of Language Immersion

  • Students tend to score as high or higher on standardized tests in English than students in traditional programs.
  • Students develop proficiency in two languages.  When students learn a language at a younger age, they may develop a more authentic accent, and it is much easier for them to pick up the language quickly.
  • There is no negative long-term impact on students’ English language skills.
  • Students may benefit cognitively – building attention skills, strong non-verbal problem-solving abilities and more flexible thinking.

Types of Language Immersion Programs

There are several approaches to language immersion. Two of the most popular approaches are foreign language immersion and two-way immersion (sometimes referred to as dual language).

  • Foreign language immersion programs are structured to primarily serve English-speaking students. Students initially receive most of their instruction in the target language so they can gain the fluency necessary to do core academic work in that language. Formal English instruction typically increases over the course of elementary school.
  • In two-way immersion programs, classes are divided evenly between students who are native speakers of English and native speakers of the target language. In these programs, students learn from their peers as well as their teachers. Students from each language background help their counterparts learn a second language, while all gain appreciation for another culture.

As their skills develop, students in both types of immersion programs are expected to communicate easily and work at grade level in both languages.

Through these programs students will:

  • Learn to read, write, speak and comprehend both the target language and English.
  • Take part in a stimulating academic program that promotes student learning and development.
  • Gain greater cultural awareness and appreciation.
  • Gain an advantage in the future job market.
  • Prepare for the challenges of a global society.
